The series image machine / machine image explores the relationship between image and code. Each “image” in the series consists of a grid containing the hand-drawn pixel values of a digital image, an analogue set of algorithmic instructions for the execution of the work. The series uses simple generative strategies to deconstruct the digital image. Starting from a binary process, the flip of a coin, it works upwards to the roll of a die, and increasingly complex algorithmic processes involving digital computers and machine learning. This body of work looks at how algorithmic images exist in translation between numerical values and visual compositions.
