Algorithmic Processes in Image Production

In this talk, Rosemary Lee will present her investigations into the historical threads that converge in generative image production, centering on her recent book, Algorithm, Image Art (2024), as well as drawing on her artistic practice. Lee argues for approaching the recent hype around machine learning and artificial intelligence by grounding recent developments in relation to discourses and examples from the past that meaningfully inform our grasp of present issues concerning art and technology. This work expands on Lee’s PhD research on the adoption of machine learning in contemporary artistic practices and what it means for image studies (2020). Rosemary Lee will also frame her theoretical insights within the context of her practice-led approach, discussing how artistic explorations contribute to her methodology and giving an overview of several recent and ongoing projects including A Structural Plan for Imitation (2024–present) and Digital Dark Matter (2025–present).
